The Twin Cities Metropolitan Area
The Twin Cities metropolitan area in Minnesota is made up of Minneapolis and Saint Paul as well as the surrounding suburbs. With a population of over 3.6 million, it is the 16th largest metropolitan area in the United States. The Twin Cities sit along the banks of the Mississippi River with Minneapolis on the west bank and Saint Paul on the east bank.
Minneapolis
Minneapolis is the larger and more populous of the two cities. Minneapolis has over 429,000 residents and is the county seat of Hennepin County. It anchors the west metro area with a diverse economy spanning healthcare, banking and finance, technology, arts and entertainment. Minneapolis is known for its impressive park system with lakes, trails and green spaces throughout the city. Popular attractions include the Walker Art Center, Minnesota Orchestra, First Avenue music venue, Uptown district, Lyn-Lake area, Mill City Museum along the Mississippi River and chain of lakes. The city government is led by Mayor Jacob Frey and the Minneapolis City Council.
Saint Paul
Saint Paul, the state capital of Minnesota, sits east of Minneapolis. Saint Paul is the second largest city in the state with over 311,000 residents and is the county seat of Ramsey County. The city has a diverse economy with major companies like Ecolab and Securian Financial headquartered in downtown. Other major sites include the Xcel Energy Center arena, CHS Field baseball stadium, and Cathedrals on Summit Hill. The city contains an array of historic neighborhoods, gritty districts like Lowertown and trendy areas like Selby Avenue and Grand Avenue for boutique shopping and dining. The city government is headed by Mayor Melvin Carter and the Saint Paul City Council.
Connecting the Twin Cities
The two cities are connected by the Metro light rail and bus system ([https://www.metrotransit.org/]) operated by Metro Transit. The system includes rail lines, local and express buses serving Minneapolis, Saint Paul and many suburbs. The Green Line light rail connects downtown Minneapolis to downtown Saint Paul in about 30 minutes. The Blue Line links downtown Minneapolis to the airport and Mall of America. Plans for future expansion include the Gold Line to serve the eastern metro and the Purple Line between Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Universities and Colleges
The Twin Cities region is also home to an array of top colleges and universities. The University of Minnesota Twin Cities is one of the major public research universities in the Midwest with over 52,000 students across its Minneapolis and Saint Paul campuses. Other schools include Augsburg University, Hamline University, Macalester College, University of St. Thomas and more. These schools attract thousands of students to the Twin Cities each year.
